history

Bisca was founded in 1994 by Richard McLane, a time served blacksmith, after graduating from Northumbria University with a first class honours degree in design. During his time at University Richard experimented with combining elements of glass, steel and timber into his designs, even though tutors preferred students to specialise in a single medium. Instead Richard concentrated on becoming confident and competent in the interfaces between various media and pushing boundaries in design aesthetics.

about Bisca

Bisca are designers and manufacturers specialising in bespoke staircases, balustrades and architectural features. With an enviable reputation for creating beautiful, hand crafted and high quality commissions, Bisca work for clients locally, nationally and globally.

BISCA is an acronym of Brass, Iron, Steel, Copper & Aluminium

The name is derived from the materials Richard used in the early days of Bisca, although today Bronze, Glass, Timber and a whole multitude of other materials have been added to the design portfolio.

A chance encounter whilst exhibiting at a London design exhibition catapulted Richard into the staircase business. Impressed by his creativity and the quality of the products on display, a property developer asked Richard if he could design him a staircase for his own home. Having absolutely no experience with staircases, Richard’s answer, of course, was yes!

Further staircase commissions for the developers property portfolio followed; two years later and Bisca not only had a nice portfolio of unique staircase designs, but were getting enquiries from other people who had heard about or seen their staircases and appreciated the bespoke nature and flawless finish.

Since then, Bisca has earned a fantastic reputation for creating beautiful bespoke staircases and, although we enjoy doing one-off architectural pieces, the majority of our time is spent in the design and manufacture of bespoke staircases and balustrades for clients in the UK and overseas.

Our in-house designers fully explore the potential and characteristics of your space and its surroundings along with all aspects of material, finish and interface options to suit your preferences and budget.

project process

Our project process sees each commission being built 3 times; designed once in virtual 3D space, again in our workshop and finally during installation. The finished commission will be flawless, literally, and will withstand the closest inspection.
