Bisca was founded in 1995 by Richard McLane after graduating from Northumbria University with a first class honours degree in design. During his time at University Richard experimented with combining elements of glass, steel and timber into his designs, rebelling against tutors keen for students to specialise in a single medium. Instead Richard concentrated on becoming confident and competent in the interface between various media and pushing boundaries in design aesthetics.
Bisca, is an acronym of Brass, Iron, Steel, Copper and Aluminium. The name reflects a selection of the wide range of materials used in |
many of our commissions. Whilst exhibiting at a London show, despite having no previous experience in staircase construction, Richard was asked if he could design and build a rather unique spiral staircase. This first commission led to more and more enquiries and thus Bisca took on and redefined the market for bespoke staircases.
15 years later, Bisca has earned a fantastic reputation for creating beautiful staircases and, although we produce canopies and enjoy doing one-off architectural pieces, the majority of our time is spent in the design and manufacture of staircases and balustrades for clients in the UK and overseas. |
