Doing a runner at the end a project is not always a bad thing
Especially when the Runner in question is a stunning Royal Purple stair runner...
Bespoke contemporary and timeless feature staircase rising from basement to ground floor and ground floor to first floor.
Each flight was based on an ultra slim structure and continuous treads and risers, fixed so that each flight appears to "float" within its space.
Treads are clad in Wenge timber to match other fixtures and give a very contemporary feel to the property.
Latterly the dark brown of the timber has been complemented with voluptuous carpet runner adding a splash of vibrant royal colour to contrast with the neutral decor
The balustrade is of leather clad handrails mounted on low iron glass panels framing all open stair and landing edges.
Bespoke staircase completely transforms property North of the border
Our brief was to replace a clumsy wooden staircase which sat uncomfortably in the stair space and blocked out the light at the same time.
Our solution was a graceful helical staircase of continuous oak treads and risers winding from the ground floor to the first floor. We arranged the treads helically but allowed for wider passing areas.
The slim and graceful stainless steel handrail and balustrade sweep down to the floor ending in a curving newel.
This stair completely transformed the property and created a feature at the centre of the house. LIKE on facebook if you agree!
With an intuitive understanding of this client's needs, you succeeded in transforming a hall with a lump of wood in the middle into a spacious reception area with a graceful helix in steel, walnut and leather. Thank you so much.

The refurbishment market is currently enjoying somewhat of a revival as developers, interior designers and individuals see the value of restoring and renewing rather than ripping out and starting again.
Sympathetic refurbishments usually involve the challenge of updating a traditional, tired or just plain old fashioned property or staircase. Our designers are able to blur the boundaries between traditional and contemporary and use a mix of materials and styles incorporating both into a commission that withstands the test of time.
In the about us/workshop section of our website you can see for yourself that the craftsmen at Bisca are multi-skilled individuals who are fearlessly competent at metalwork, woodwork, blacksmithing, welding, polishing and are experienced in working with glass, timber, acrylics or metal materials.
A bespoke staircase with a difference. An innovative solution was required for the garden of a Kensington property. See the Before, During and After photos by following the Facebook link.
Our solution linked a new glass extension to the garden and basement areas of a Kensington property.
From the glass floor of the new extension, our glass and stainless steel staircase stylishly descends into the garden area. From garden level, the balustrade continues down above stone steps to basement level.

A unique opportunity to design a narrow and winding staircase for an 18th Century Grade II listed Mill in North Yorkshire
Providing access to the upper floor of this beautiful 18th Century Mill, the narrow and winding staircase design was constructed of pine treads and risers, with overhanging tread noses for a traditional feature in keeping with the mill. The pine will slowly darken over time and blend with the existing timber in the building.
A central pine post provided support for the steps, and extended above the upper floor to connect the handrail and balustrade guarding the top landing edge.

A simple white painted balustrade perfectly sets off this beautiful bespoke staircase in the entrance hall of a North London property
A stunning bespoke cantilevered straight staircase.
An elegant and sweeping contemporary staircase with dark walnut cantilevered treads complemented by a simple white painted plaster balustrade capped with a dark Havana leather hand-stitched handrail.

Q: How many men does it take to carry a sheet of glass - and where are they going with it?
Answer: A lot! especially when the glass in question weighs a third of a tonne.
Our team recently completed the installation of a bespoke glass bridge and staircase balustrade for a property renovation in Yorkshire.
The sheer size of the glass panels specified required a team effort for the lift and shift element of the project, but the result was well worth the effort.
The large panels used on the glass / bridge allow natural light from the glazed roof to flood down through the first floor to the ground floor whilst the uncluttered feel of the glass balustrading was designed to give the rooms a light and airy feel.

In a bit of a pickle
Forged, formed and pickled uprights on a stunning basement staircase
We recently designed and installed a balustrade for this basement staircase in central London.
These L shaped uprights were hand crafted in our forge by tapering flat bar to round before being acid pickled. They were then satin polished to give them a beautiful and tactile finish.

Snakes & Ladders
We don't do ladders - but we are good at stainless steel snakes of the handrail variety
A satin polished stainless steel handrail travelling siniously from its ground floor newel post, up the length of the staircase before snaking back on itself along the landing edges and terminating neatly into the landing wall.
This and more recent commissions are now uploaded into our gallery.
Contemporary staircase rising through a light filled stairwell from lower ground to first floor
Our brief was to create a staircase that made the most of the natural light flooding into the stairwell from the landing windows in this family home in the North of England.
Our design incorporated air dried chunky oak treads, supported by a satin polished stainless steel spine and low iron glass balustrade for crystal clear visibility.
A handrail clad in dark brown Havana leather runs continuously up from lower ground to first floor.
A stunning contemporary staircase of hand forged steel and reclaimed antique oak
This bespoke staircase was designed empathetically for a prestigious period property restoration in Central London and manages to be elegant, gracious and with an air of understated beauty.
The contemporary staircase sits in a double height space and is a masterpiece in itself, perfectly at home amongst the other works of art in the surrounding area.
Chunky timber treads are of reclaimed antique Oak and work spectacularly well with the hand-forged and polished stainless steel balustrade running continuously up the stairs and along the landing edge. The balustrade is capped with a matching antique Oak handrail.

Our Art Deco inspired balustrade at 4 Seasons Hotel in London's Park Lane
as featured in GS Magazine and photographed by Anthony Weller of Archimage
"The design used the 1930's as a starting point for inspiration. The dark woods and stones and rich colour harmonies of burgundy and gold are accented with clean architectural details and polished chrome elements. The sumptuous finishes give a club-like atmosphere to the public areas, showcasing a collection of traditional and modern artwork and significant restored historic elements.
... The discreet reception area gives a dramatic entrance to the tea-lounge. The spaces features a relocated grand stair leading to the ballrooms with an Art-Deco inspired balustrade, an antique chandelier and a full height plaster hand moulded sculptural wall featuring natural motifs" ...

Bisca commissioned to create art deco inspired balustrade for London's Four Seasons Hotel in Park Lane
London's Four Seasons hotel has reopened following a refurbishment by architecture firm Reardon Smith.
Taking 28 months, the project was the first time the building had been entirely stripped back to its structure since construction 40 years ago. The design includes a glazed extension, newly modelled garden suites, and a new lift core.
Reardon Smith brought in staircase specialist Bisca to create an elaborate art deco inspired balustrade for the staircase and gallery. (article in FXmagazine.co.uk March 2011)
Heavy Weight Restoration Completed
Dec 2010: Pride of place in our workshop is a 1920’s Massey power hammer used for forging. Thought to originate from a merchant navy vessel, this hammer probably crossed the oceans a time or two before ending up in a British Rail workshop and being sold for scrap in 1998.
Rescued from an almost certain demise the hammer was brought back to our workshop and commissioned to the original drawings. This is the second refurbishment and it’s now good to go for the next 10 years!
