Our workshop is set up to fully embrace a wide range of disciplines and employs craftsmen with a passion for quality, attention to detail and an understanding and empathy with the process of design.
Craftsmen
The workshop craftsmen are multi-skilled individuals who are fearlessly competent at metalwork, woodwork, blacksmithing, welding, polishing etc. To foster versatility there is no demarcation of roles and the staff are experienced in working with glass, timber, acrylics or metal materials.
One of the fundamentals of the Bisca workshop is the close relationship with our Design department. By working closely together during the design stage, all details are resolved before the project is formally handed into the workshop. The workshop staff have a clear vision and objective and can concentrate on quality and assembly; however on the rare occasion issues arise during manufacture, they have the skills and abilities to resolve them.
Bisca staircases and balustrades are installed by the craftsmen that built it in our workshop. Because they are familiar with your project, installation will be seamless, professional and with the minimum of disruption to yourself and your home.
The forge
As well as being equipped with the traditional fabricating equipment for welding, polishing, cutting etc, the workshop also has its own blacksmith shop, including a forge, a 5cwt Massey power hammer and fly and hydraulic presses.
Having a forge in house gives Bisca the ability to be creative in this specialist field. Hot metalwork is a serious discipline and as our designers are in close proximity to the forge and understand its boundaries, they can therefore incorporate the creative element that forge work can bring into design.
The Massey power hammer dates from circa 1920 and, due to the way the motor is attached to the hammer, is thought to originate from a merchant navy vessel. It then spent some time in the British Rail workshops in Norwich before being sold for scrap at a sale in Darlington in 1998. It was commissioned in 1999 to the original drawings and in 2010 was refurbished again. It is now good for regular use for the next 10 years!
