A bespoke oak staircase in a property renovation in Yorkshire.
Reflecting the Victorian heritage of the property, we used solid oak treads hewn from Yorkshire Oak teamed with forged uprights, made individually by the Bisca blacksmith to the clients design. The uprights are pure mini-theatre - being formed, forged, tapered, blackened and waxed with bright polished highlights.
An oval section hand carved oak handrail terminates into the rear of the structural columns. The columns themselves were clad in a tactile metal casing and incorporated into the flared feature bottom tread.
This staircase was a finalist in the Build It Awards 2014.
Using the living space to the best advantage, the lower section of the staircase was turned through 90 degrees from the wall with a gradual flare, leading the eye to a curvaceous oval plinth and large feature tread surrounding the columns. The treads on the lower section of the stair appear to float without support, whilst the generous form of the bottom treads flare invitingly into the new heart of the home.
