Centre Spine Staircase, Cambridge

A centre spine staircase of pale oak and low iron glass.

Spine staircases are currently making a bit of a renaissance and are popular choice for a contemporary look.

The spine is of hand finished brushed and polished stainless steel. The spine supports solid oak treads and a low iron glass balustrade. The balustrade is in effect a fire rated glass wall. The handrail is fixed to the opposite wall of the property.

The brief included a large feature bottom tread to fit snugly into the corner of the room and provide a comfortable landing for exit and entry.

When considering a centre spine you need to think about the design aspect - many fabricators now offer this type of staircase - but may pay scant attention to how the treads are fixed, welding aesthetics, or how the staircase looks underneath.
