A Beautiful Curved Staircase

A beautiful curved staircase has the power to define a home — not simply as a means of movement between floors, but as an architectural statement that shapes how a space is experienced. When Bisca were introduced to this grand, characterful villa in Twickenham by London-based interior designer Charlotte Owen, the staircase presented both a challenge and an opportunity.

Rising across four floors from basement to third level, the existing structure had evolved over more than 150 years. Each flight felt disconnected, both visually and structurally, with bulky newel posts and mismatched proportions disrupting the flow of the home. The staircase no longer reflected the elegance of the property, nor did it offer the comfort expected of a modern living environment.

More concerning were the structural issues. Treads had sagged by up to 25mm, landing edges had warped, and the central flights had visibly slumped. Previous remedial work had failed to address the root causes, leaving the staircase uncomfortable and, in places, unsafe. The homeowners and interior designer recognised that a replacement staircase alone would not deliver the cohesive transformation they were seeking. Instead, they required a carefully considered solution — one that would restore integrity while introducing a unique staircase design that enhanced the home’s character.

Staircase Planning for a Cohesive and Elegant Curved Staircase

The vision centred on creating a curved staircase that would read as one continuous architectural feature, flowing gracefully through the heart of the home. It was essential that any intervention felt seamless, as though the staircase had always been designed this way.

The brief called for sweeping ribbon-like stringers, softly curving transitions, and a feature staircase balustrade that would complement the wider interior scheme. The client was drawn to elegant vertical uprights in a warm metallic finish, with inspiration taken from antiqued brass and bronze tones. Alongside this, a dark-stained handrail would introduce warmth and contrast, reflecting the homeowner’s love of dark oak flooring and refined material palettes.

Importantly, the staircase planning process also required structural reinforcement. The footprint would remain, preserving the building’s heritage, but the new design needed to incorporate hidden strength and stability. The aspiration was clear — to create a beautiful curved staircase that combined sculptural elegance with engineering precision.

A Unique Curved Staircase Design with Bronze Staircase Balustrade

Bisca’s approach began with an in-depth structural survey, opening walls and ceilings to fully understand the extent of movement within the historic structure. Working closely with structural engineers, the team developed a solution that would restore integrity before introducing the new design.

A continuous ribbon-like stringer was conceived, rising from the basement to the top floor in a sinuous, curvaceous staircase formation. This flowing structure concealed a newly engineered steel framework, providing the strength required while maintaining a light and elegant appearance.

Each tread was carefully reshaped to follow the curved profile, creating sculptural forms that replaced the original block-like construction. Winders were integrated seamlessly, enhancing the sense of movement and flow.

The bronze staircase balustrade became the defining feature. Slender uprights in an aged bronze finish were introduced, forming a delicate yet striking vertical rhythm. These elegant elements complemented the wider interior palette, while a continuous dark oak handrail provided warmth, tactility, and comfort.

The result was a feature staircase balustrade that transformed the space — refined, contemporary, and perfectly suited to the home’s classical architecture.

Craftsmanship Behind a Beautiful Curved Staircase

Due to the structural complexity, this project required two carefully managed installation phases. Initially, Bisca introduced hydraulic jacks and temporary support systems, carefully lifting and re-levelling the staircase to its ideal position. This meticulous preparation ensured that the new curved staircase could be installed onto a stable and robust structure.

Every component was then manufactured bespoke, from the flowing steel stringer to the hand-carved treads and precisely finished bronze uprights. Bisca’s expert craftsmen worked with millimetre precision, ensuring that new and existing elements blended seamlessly.

Project management was central throughout. Coordinating engineers, designers, and installation specialists, Bisca delivered a smooth and carefully orchestrated transformation — maintaining accountability and ensuring the homeowner’s vision was realised.

A Beautiful Curved Staircase That Transforms the Home

The finished staircase now rises gracefully through the property as a beautiful curved staircase that unifies all four floors. The flowing lines, sculptural detailing, and bronze staircase balustrade create a sense of elegance and harmony, while the restored structure delivers comfort and confidence for daily use.

What was once a fragmented and failing staircase is now a unique staircase that defines the home — a centrepiece that reflects both craftsmanship and thoughtful collaboration. By combining structural expertise, bespoke design, and meticulous installation, Bisca delivered a transformation that enhances both the character and value of this Twickenham villa.

For homeowners, interior designers, and architects seeking a beautiful curved staircase that blends engineering excellence with timeless design, this project demonstrates the difference a fully integrated, bespoke approach can make — and why partnering with Bisca is the first step towards creating something truly exceptional.
