A Beautiful Oak Staircase Designed Around Arrival

For this farmhouse renovation project, the staircase – with reclaimed oak treads and sinuous curves – was always intended to become the emotional centrepiece of the entrance hall; introducing softness, movement and warmth from the moment you take the first step inside.

The homeowners wanted a house rich in honesty and craftsmanship – elegant yet understated; contemporary yet rooted in the character of a traditional home. Bisca was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a bespoke staircase – balancing sculptural beauty with comfort and practicality. Drawn to the flowing forms seen throughout Bisca’s helical staircase gallery, our clients wanted their staircase to feel graceful, tactile and emotionally connected to the architecture around it.

Curved Oak Treads add Emotional Presence

Set within mature parkland and surrounded by ancient oak trees, the newly built farmhouse was designed to feel timeless and deeply connected to its rural setting. The staircase space had already been defined within the architectural layout, and so the priority for our design team was to maximise beauty, comfort and flow within the footprint available. Central to Bisca’s unique approach is refining proportion, detail and movement, so the staircase feels fully integrated within the property’s layout and character.

Every detail of the stair plan was carefully considered – alongside functionality, the vision centred on a curved staircase with floating qualities – impactful without feeling imposing. Reclaimed oak introduced warmth and authenticity to the treads, while tactile details such as an elegant oval-profile handrail, reinforced the crafted nature of the design.

A Helical Staircase Inspired by Nature and Movement

Designed to elegantly wind through the entrance hall, the staircase adds a sculptural presence while maintaining openness and flow of light. Despite its scale, its lightweight appearance floats from the wall on a slim white-painted steel structure. Sweeping curves soften the surrounding architecture, while subtle lighting behind floating oak treads enhance atmosphere and depth, as natural light fades.

The reclaimed oak treads were carefully selected for their rich tones and aged character – hand-finished with a traditional edge profile to reflect Bisca’s belief that beauty is found in the finer details. The staircase balustrade continues this language of craftmanship. Forged and tapered steel uprights introduce texture and individuality, while their gentle curves echo movement within the stair itself. Completing the design – the handrail softly flares at its base, to widen and welcome the entrance space.

Crafted in Layers, Designed with Emotion

Behind the calm simplicity of this finished staircase lies an extraordinary level of planning, care and attention to detail. Each element was manufactured in Bisca’s specialist workshops, where craftsmanship, precision and material understanding remain central to the process. Today, the staircase stands as a defining feature within our clients’ farmhouse, balancing timeless character with temporary refinement.
