Simple Forged Balustrade, London

Simple forged balustrade design.

A deceptively simple forged balustrade design transformed a tired looking staircase and landings in a central London property. Painted wooden spindles originally dominated and overpowered the space.

The client wanted traditional and simple but designed in empathy with the architecture. He also wanted to keep the original handrail which brings its own challenges.

We removed the old spindles and templated the staircase. Back at the studio we designed uprights to fit into the treads, handrails and landing edges. The uprights were made by our own blacksmith and are textured and blackened square bar.

The end result is a balustrade that fits so perfectly into the property it looks to be original. The contrast between white painted stair, dark steel uprights and mahogany is timeless and classic. You may be interested in this style if you are looking for the simplicity of Georgian design.

Staircase renovation is an option you may wish to consider if your existing staircase is structurally sound but just looking tired or dated. The most cost effective and popular option for updating a staircase is just to replace the balustrade and handrail. Going further you may like to add new feature treads at the foot of the staircase. Another option is to re-clad the staircase in timber for a completely new look without the cost of a new staircase.

Not an uncommon occurrence, the client commissioned us for additional features for the property. A textured glass floor and external steel balcony completed this project.

The large glass floor panel also lets light down into the ground floor. It transformed the once dull hallway into a light filled area, opening out onto the mews garden.

An external steel balcony, designed and installed by Bisca, also overlooks the garden, providing a relaxing area to sit in the evening sun.
