Bespoke Spine Staircase, Lake District

A bespoke spine staircase in tune with nature.

Bisca worked with the architect, Savage & Chadwick, to design a curved staircase for a Lake District house.

We altered the original plans and moved the curve of the staircase closer to the wall. This removed the need for uprights along the wall edge and made more room in the entrance hall.

The staircase has oak treads supported by a plastered stringer.

Bisca’s blacksmith made the uprights individually, working to an organic design. A feature point curves across the centre of the landing balustrade, reducing to a straight forge finished bar where it meets the wall.
