A curved staircase shaped by landscape and light; our client’s property was set within a striking new-build home overlooking the Pennine landscape, with rolling views toward Emley Moor. This modern staircase design was envisioned as a sculptural centrepiece within a forever family home, designed for gathering and entertaining.
Bisca was invited to collaborate with the talented interior design team at One17 – an established and trusted partner – on a project where the architectural intent had already been carefully conceived. Its unique setting called for a curved staircase that would harmonise with a landscape-driven interior: warm, subtle, calming, and refined, yet confidently expressive of the craftsmanship Bisca is renowned for.
A Vision Rooted in Subtlety and Elegance
The client sought “a well-detailed staircase which was non-contentious and brought subtlety to the space.” Their vision centred on an elegant staircase composed of bronze, glass, and leather – materials chosen for their timelessness, tactility, and understated luxury.
They required a design that flowed effortlessly between levels; resolved complex architectural intersections with ease; and showcased precision craftsmanship. Bisca was also commissioned to create coordinated handrails, ensuring a unified design language and visual coherence throughout the property.
Crafting Harmony: Staircase Curves Defined by Clarity
While One17 had developed a strong concept, Bisca’s role was to elevate this further – both technically, functionally, and aesthetically. Our approach – whether developing a brand-new idea or refining an existing one, always returns to our core design principles which consider spatial harmony, comfort, structural intelligence, and the emotional experience of moving through a space.
The architect visited our Yorkshire-based studio to explore prototypes, finishes, and interface conditions with the curved walls and changing level geometry. This hands-on collaboration shaped a curved staircase defined by clarity, craftsmanship, and beautifully resolved detailing.
The resulting glass staircase features straight flights and winders, between full-depth stringers finished in lustrous metallic bronze. Continuous oak staircase treads and risers extend both above and below, creating crisp, uninterrupted surfaces that heighten the contemporary aesthetic.
Sinuous Curves Engineered with Precision
Curved glass staircase balustrades are bonded seamlessly into the structure and crowned with hand-stitched leather handrails. Integrated LED staircase lighting sits discreetly beneath the handrail to cast a soft illumination across the glass, while adding an atmospheric touch which becomes particularly effective as the natural light fades. This staircase demanded exceptional technical consideration, particularly regarding the tight-radius curved glass and the precision required at the point of intersection with the surrounding curvaceous walls.
At Bisca’s workshop, every component, including glass, metalwork, timber, leather, and lighting, was dry-fitted with meticulous care to ensure flawless accuracy once the structure reached site. A liquid bronze finish was applied using specialist metal-coating techniques, producing a seamless, tactile surface. Bisca’s in-house artisans hand-wrapped and stitched the leather handrails, while the integrated LED channels were installed with millimetre accuracy to preserve the clean, minimalist design.
A Centrepiece of Refined Beauty & Lasting Craft
Each stage of our manufacture process ensured the staircase arrived on site with every detail having passed the closest of inspections – each component tested and perfected. Close and early collaboration with One17 allowed Bisca to supply plates and formers for the construction of the curved walls, ensuring architectural aspects developed in perfect synchrony. Clear communication with the wider project team, supported by rigorous pre-manufacture testing – enabled a smooth, coordinated, and seamless installation.
The final fit mirrored the precision achieved in the workshop, with every interface connecting perfectly: the glass, the curves, the lighting, and the continuous material transitions make this staircase feel effortlessly unique.
