Curved Stone Staircase for a Grand Georgian Property

This beautifully sculpted stone staircase with sweeping curves was created for a remarkable Georgian vicarage undergoing an ambitious and carefully considered property renovation. Over many years, the homeowners had embarked on a lifetime project to restore and modernise the historic property, carefully balancing its original character with a substantial contemporary extension, which mirrored the scale and presence of the period home.

At the centre of the original building sits a vast entrance hall – a space designed not simply as a passageway, but as a place of arrival. Natural materials, generous proportions and fireplaces positioned at either end of the room, create an atmosphere of quiet grandeur, where guests can instinctively pause and take in the architecture around them.

The homeowners approached Bisca after a previous provider had been unable to deliver the level of design and craftsmanship they had hoped for. They were searching for a replacement staircase that could resolve the challenges of the space, while bringing a new sense of elegance and cohesion to the interior.

Our clients’ ambition was clear: to introduce graceful movement into the room through a staircase carved from stone; one whose flowing form would sit naturally within its Georgian setting and become a stunning architectural centrepiece.

Curvaceous Beauty Shaped by its Setting

The client envisioned a staircase that would feel both timeless and refined – a design which would echo the character of the building, while extending elegantly into the centre of the space. With marble flooring and classical columns planned for the hallway, they were naturally drawn to the permanence of stone.

Yet the design was shaped by an important constraint. The footprint was confined between two supporting pillars; architectural elements which could not be altered. Working within these limitations required careful engineering to ensure the stair remained comfortable to use, while preserving its unique sweeping form.

Just as important as the structure itself was the role the stair would play within the life of the home. The homeowners imagined the base of the stair as a welcoming focal point – a place where guests might gather, pause and admire the craftsmanship which defines the space. From the earliest sketches, the intention was to create something that felt entirely at home within the architecture – as though it has always belonged.

A Staircase Sculpted with Marble and Metal

The finished design celebrates the natural beauty of Carrara marble, with polished treads and risers forming the sculptural backbone of the stair. Each element is crafted with precise detailing, incorporating subtle decoration and softly bullnosed edges. Beneath the marble lies a carefully engineered steel structure. Visually lightweight yet immensely strong, this hidden framework supports the stair allowing its curved form to appear almost effortlessly, as it unfolds through the hall.

As the stair descends, its width gradually increases before meeting an elevated feature plinth. This generous first step strengthens the sense of arrival, drawing the staircase further into the room and reinforcing its role as the heart of the space.

Flowing along both sides of the stair is a distinctive balustrade crafted from mild and stainless steel. The panels incorporate an intricate scrolled design formed from forged flat bar and tapered round profiles, each one shaped by hand. Finished in deep black with polished stainless highlights, the metalwork introduces texture and movement which beautifully complement the fluid lines of the marble.

Crowning the balustrade, a bespoke brass handrail flows continuously along the stair and across the landing. Polished above and finished with a soft satin underside, it provides a warm tactile contrast to the cool clarity of the stone. At first floor level, Carrara marble nosings mirror the treads below, allowing the staircase to transition seamlessly into the surrounding architecture.

Craftsmanship in Every Detail

Behind the elegance of this curved stone staircase lies an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. Each marble tread and riser was individually produced to follow the exact geometry of the stair’s sweeping plan. Achieving this precision required close collaboration between designers, engineers and skilled makers, ensuring every element aligned perfectly.

The staircase balustrade panels were forged and assembled by hand, their scrolling forms shaped using traditional metalworking techniques before being finished with subtle contrasts between blackened steel and polished stainless highlights. Together, these elements create a staircase that feels both effortless and highly refined – a harmonious balance of engineering, artistry and material.

Light catches the polished marble as the stair sweeps upward, while the balustrade’s intricate metalwork -with hot-punched holes, casts delicate shadows across the floor. From every angle, new details reveal themselves – the rhythm of the curves, the texture of the forging, and the warmth of the brass handrail. What began as the search for a replacement staircase has become something far more meaningful for this client; a sculpture which elevates the interior scheme of their entire home.

For those embarking on a renovation project or designing a new home, this project reveals what is possible when imagination, craftsmanship and architecture come together. A thoughtfully designed staircase can not only transform the experience of a space – but also shape how a home is first encountered, and how it then goes on to be remembered.

At Bisca, every staircase begins with a conversation, exploring how materials, form and craftsmanship can bring a client’s vision to life; our aim always to create something truly extraordinary.
