Elegant Floating Staircase, North Yorkshire

Rising from the centre of a newly built farmhouse, this elegant floating staircase combines flowing curves, character oak and hand forged detailing to create a sculptural focal point, which reshapes how this home is experienced from the moment of arrival.

Designed for a newly built farmhouse in North Yorkshire, this elegant floating staircase emerged from a desire to create a welcoming entrance hall, in a home centred around quality, detail and enduring craftsmanship. The homeowners approached Bisca during the early stages of their project.

While the architecture was taking shape, the staircase shown on the drawings felt uninspiring. Positioned tightly against a wall and close to the front door, the structure felt disconnected from the architecture and lacked the presence it deserved within such a prominent location. With a keen eye for detail, the homeowners wanted a staircase which felt purposeful, beautifully crafted and fully connected to the building it belongs to.

A Floating Form, Reshaping Space

Rather than simply refining the original design, Bisca explored the space from a completely fresh perspective. By reversing the orientation and reshaping the route of the staircase within the property, its full potential was unlocked. The base was brought into the centre of the hallway, opening views towards the kitchen, living areas and front entrance – while bringing a greater sense of openness and flow to the home.

The curve of the stair was carefully developed to improve comfort and circulation. Our design team were able to enlarge the first-floor landing to provide a welcoming reading area, which overlooked the hall below. Rising through the double-height space, its sculptural design depicts elegance, with a floating appearance emerging seamlessly from the surrounding architecture.

The Beauty of Honest Materials

Materiality played a central role in bringing character and personality to this bespoke staircase design. The oak brings a crisp contemporary clarity, softened by the warmth and character of natural timber. Character oak treads and risers bring structure and definition, while the sawtooth profile introduces a subtle rhythm that draws the eye upward through the space.

Supporting the stair is a visually lightweight structure, allowing it to float effortlessly within the space. Connecting the handrail, hand-forged steel uprights introduce a softer, more organic language. Inspired by traditional blacksmithing techniques, each upright carries subtle variations created through the handcrafted process.

Their hammered texture and burnished finish complement the reclaimed pewter details found throughout the farmhouse, while sweeping oak handrails mirror the flowing geometry of the stair itself. As light moves through the hall, the balustrade creates changing patterns of shadow and texture.

Crafted to Feel Effortless

The calm simplicity of the finished staircase conceals countless design decisions, carefully resolved to ensure every element feels perfectly at ease within the architecture. Every junction, transition and connection was considered with the same level of care, allowing the staircase to read as a single sculptural form.

More than a feature within the hall, the staircase has become part of the home’s identity. Evolving from a conventional layout, the staircase is today a defining feature of the home; enhancing the way the space flows, connects and is experienced.

For homeowners seeking a staircase which offers timeless character and lasting impact, this project demonstrates how thoughtful staircase design can transform the experience of a home.
