A Grand Curved Staircase to Welcome Every Guest…

From our very first conversations, the client imagined a staircase which would greet guests the moment they stepped inside – a place of arrival and anticipation, and one day the backdrop to countless wedding photographs. As a former pub, the property was reimagined to become an exclusive boutique hotel. Its staircase would create a first impression which guests would carry with them long after they left.
 
Sara Cussons – interior designer and co-founder of Cussons & Storey – introduced Bisca to the project, sharing our client’s vision with care. Alongside architects Bramhall Blenkharn, with whom Bisca shares a strong working relationship, the staircase was developed as a natural part of the wider transformation. Their architectural direction complemented Bisca’s specialist staircase experience at every turn.

Grandeur With Considered Proportions

Here, a sense of occasion and everyday practicality were to share the same space, all within the requirements of commercial regulations. While the upper flight rises quietly against the wall, the lower flight flares elegantly into the room – bringing the grandeur and glamour our client was promised.

Generous at its base and assured as it climbs, the silhouette opens its arms to all who enter, with a seating area nestled into the surrounding space.

Answering the client brief for a full string design – sinuous bands of steel trace the staircase’s form, discreetly holding integrated staircase lighting within. From the wall edge, a gentle glow spills horizontally across each tread, softly guiding every step.

Treads and risers in painted tulipwood share a mellow white finish with the steel ribbon – a deliberate choice for a busy hotel, allowing the stair to remain immaculate for every celebration to come. A carpet runner brings softness underfoot, and a gentle feeling of home.

A Warm and Tactile Touch…

The balustrade was shaped around the hotel’s wider scheme, bringing richness and character without becoming ornate. Textured uprights, hand-forged in Bisca’s workshop and finished in bronze, rise from the steel without visible fixings; their rhythm echoed by matching bronze stair rods.

Dark-stained sapele handrails provide a graceful line for every hand – their oval profile flowing into sculptural newels at the base, before wrapping around the landing above. Design director and founder at Bisca, Richard McLane explains:

Our clients wanted a staircase which would welcome every guest and belong in every wedding photograph. We used the curve to open the room at its base, allowing the staircase to draw the room together.
