Modern Curved Staircase Design, East Yorkshire

Designed for a residence of grand stature, this modern curved staircase transforms the emotional experience of our client's property. Nestled into a full height feature window, its materials were selected to complement the wider interior scheme - incorporating golden tones from solid bronze uprights, with a graceful structure wrapping seamlessly around hand-carved, oak treads.

Commissioned to craft and install a staircase designed for a modern detached residence in East Yorkshire, our client’s staircase was both understated and outdated. Bisca was introduced to this staircase renovation project by esteemed interior designer, Phillipa Lance Interior Design.

Contemporary and Curved – A Staircase with Purpose

The pre-existing stair told the wrong story – commercial in appearance and devoid of any soul, it lacked the elegance it deserved. The staircase had the potential to become something more: an architectural centrepiece worthy of its setting. After visiting Bisca’s HQ and touring the workshops, Phillipa witnessed the scale of craftsmanship that was possible – understanding this was not simply a project to replace an existing staircase – but provided an opportunity to create a sculptural work-of-art; to develop a bespoke staircase design unique to this client. One that would anchor the interior scheme she was responsible for.

The client was open-minded but clear in aspiration: the new staircase should feel comfortable, fluid and quietly luxurious. It would occupy a similar footprint to the previous stair, yet avoid the cramped and clumsy feel that compromised its potential. As with every Bisca project, form followed function. Structural walls, with a dramatic full-height curved window overlooking extensive grounds, could not be altered. The staircase needed to invite movement from all angles, as guests entered the expansive hallway.

A Staircase Where Oak, Bronze and Light Converge

Working closely with Phillipa Lance ensured the staircase design aligned perfectly with her bespoke interior vision. Bronze feature furniture, stained oak flooring and back-lit Onyx pillars at the entrance all informed the palette. Early discussions during the structural survey, allowed us to conceal the interface alongside materials selected for other areas of the property.

Our aim was not for the staircase to merely connect floors – but to become a piece of art within the heart of the home. Our response was a luxurious, modern staircase design which maximised building regulations – while ensuring comfort at every step. The main curve nestles into the full-height window, presenting an elegant external silhouette, sweeping gracefully into the surrounding structural walls.

Slim oak staircase treads, finished to match the upper floor, wrap fluidly around the space. Each tread incorporates discreet staircase lighting, casting a warm glow down the risers and across the liquid bronze inner string. This subtle illumination enhances depth and atmosphere as evening falls.

A feature solid bronze balustrade introduces deep golden tones; the bespoke curves of each upright design, offering a refined nod to the client’s Egyptian heritage through its organic, hieroglyphic-like form. An oval-profile oak handrail to match the treads adds tactile warmth, ensuring the feel of the stair is as refined as its appearance. Curved detailing continues into the first-floor landing, reinforcing the softness of its presence and ensuring cohesion with the contemporary scheme, across all floor levels.

Precision Behind the Poetry – Modern and Curvaceous in Design

Creating a staircase of this scale demanded meticulous coordination. As part of Bisca’s end-to-end service, we conducted structural surveys and collaborated closely with all project partners. Every interface – from flooring junctions to wall finishes – was precisely resolved, demonstrating how thoughtful project management from the outset can positively impact both aesthetics and budget.

Each component was handcrafted in our workshops by skilled artisans. The steel structure was engineered to sweep seamlessly around the curved treads. Solid bronze uprights were forged, tapered and formed by hand; a graceful ribbon-like stringer with specialist liquid metal applied in our spray booth. Joint lines were carefully positioned to suit installation logistics and remain visually discreet.

The staircase structure was transported in sections and assembled on site with millimetre precision. Our project management team coordinated every stage, ensuring programme efficiency and flawless integration with the wider refurbishment. From the concealed structure to the plastered soffit, every detail was executed with exacting care – a hallmark of Bisca’s bespoke staircase design philosophy.

If you are planning a property renovation, new build project or considering a bespoke staircase design, we invite you to start the conversation today. By replacing the staircase, this client was able to transform the emotional experience of his property – unifying both architecture, interior design and personal heritage as one harmonious feature.
