Yorkshire Stone Cantilever
Sweeping helical of Yorkshire Stone
Bisca were commissioned to design and build a staircase from Yorkshire stone for a new build property by architects Bramhall Blenkharn. The staircase is the first thing you see on entering the house and therefore intended as an architectural statement.
Our solid stone cantilever has a helical sweeping soffit, bringing both simplicity and elegance to the design. The solid stone detail continues around a curvaceous landing edge.
The natural beauty of Limestone makes the underside of the cantilevered treads as appealing as the walking surface.
The balustrade is hand-forged bronze with oval uprights and leather-clad handrail. A matching handrail on the opposite side of the stair flows around the curved wall, this is supported by simple bronze brackets and has concealed LED lighting.
LED lighting is also concealed within a shadow gap around the curved landing wall on the opposite side. Bisca created a lighting apron in the ceiling, giving a floating effect. This highlights the slim structure and landing edges with warm light illuminating the walls below.
The landings were installed by Bisca too – designed to be slim and visually lightweight and certainly adding to the wow factor.

Bisca offer an all in one design-manufacture-installation package for stone staircases.
Historically your stonemason would probably supply the treads for your stone staircase, and a second supplier your balustrade. The templating and retrofit process required with this option is best avoided for many reasons. A staircase and balustrade divorced during the design stage will always look a little awkward when introduced for the first time during installation.
When you commission your stone staircase from Bisca our designers include the staircase, balustrade and interfaces into a single design. This compete design is then manufactured in-house and installed by our own craftsmen. Your stone stair and balustrade, be it glass, steel or bronze, will appear as one. The benefits of an inclusive package are clear to see.
