Bisca’s staircase designers approach every staircase or balustrade design with a blank sheet of paper and an open mind. Not having to restrict themselves to creating your design around common parts or stock items, they have complete freedom to create a commission completely unique to yourself and your property.
“The measure of a great staircase or balustrade is one that fits its environment and completely integrates into the character of your property regardless of period”
From your first phone call, we will take responsibility for your new staircase or balustrade, to the final installation. We know that we won’t have to return, but we do offer a 5-year guarantee on all commissions.
Details are as important as deadlines
It’s never too early to talk to us about your staircase design. There are several parameters that cross boundaries in any project, these being materials, space, time and budget. We are fully aware of the shifting nature of a project. Walls move, thickness of cladding changes, old beams/pipes or even bats are unearthed or discovered! We will liaise with other members of your project team, for example your structural engineers, project manager, builder, interior designer etc to ensure everyone is kept up to date at all times.
Unless you are a serial self builder, replacing stairs is not something you want to do more than once. With careful planning this process can be as simple as replacing a bathroom or kitchen – the only difference being a staircase is part of the architecture and will not be ripped out and replaced in a few years’ time as is often the case with kitchens and bathroom.
Replacement feature staircases are typically commissioned by home owners as part of a property restoration project. Bisca will visit your property and discuss a stair design that will work in your space before embarking on a concept design for your new staircase.

Acknowledged as staircase specialists for listed buildings or period properties, Bisca design and build with the same care and attention to detail employed by the original craftsmen. Executed properly the staircase will update the property and see it confidently through generations to come.

Staircase renovation is an option you may wish to consider if your existing staircase is structurally sound but just looking tired or dated. The most cost effective and popular option for updating a staircase is just to replace the balustrade and handrail. Going further you may like to add new feature treads at the foot of the staircase or perhaps re-clad the staircase in timber for a completely new look without the cost of a new staircase.
For replacement balustrades you can choose between glass, timber, steel or plaster. Position, family requirements and budget are all important factors in making the right decision. It’s important to consider any landing or galleries when obtaining quotations not just the staircase run in isolation. Think also about what type of handrail you want and maybe newel posts.
Glass balustrades are possibly not the best option if you have a young family – unless you relish the chore of regular cleaning to remove tiny hand prints! Forged, iron or machined steel balustrades are timeless – in either contemporary or traditional forms – and can be as simple or as ornate as you desire.
