Feature Oak Staircase with Glass Balustrade, West Yorkshire
As part of a barn conversion project, our client commissioned a feature oak staircase with a striking zig-zag profile and glass balustrade. Designed to sit in harmony with the building’s exposed timber beams, integrated staircase lighting brings the structure to life, transforming it into a focal point within the centre of the home.

Our client commissioned Bisca to design, craft and install a feature oak staircase as part of an ambitious barn conversion project adjoining their existing farmhouse. The new space would provide additional living accommodation. The staircase was destined to become a key architectural feature within the heart of the building.
Having explored our bespoke gallery, the homeowner had been drawn to the quality of craftsmanship and design innovation evident within Bisca’s staircase portfolio. From the outset, architect drawings were supplied, outlining a clearly defined stairwell with surrounding walls already constructed. This provided a strong starting point, although presented a series of technical and spatial challenges which would ultimately shape the staircase design.
Feature Oak Staircase Rooted in Character
While rich in history and character, the converted barn called for a feature staircase. One which felt light, refined and contemporary – yet remained sympathetic to the building’s agricultural past. The architecture itself heavily influenced the design, with the need for a bridge-style landing to provide access to rooms on both sides of the upper floor.
The property’s age introduced further complexity, with varying floor levels upstairs. These impacted how the featured oak treads within the staircase would interconnect with adjacent rooms. In addition, the client requested sufficient head height and width beneath the upper flight to allow for a cloakroom.
Above all, the staircase brief demanded a bespoke design which balanced simplicity, openness and architectural presence; seamlessly integrating old and new, while showcasing oak within the staircase as a true feature within the home.
An Architectural Feature Framed by Glass
It quickly became clear that by combining oak and glass as materials, the staircase had the potential to serve as a central feature within the building design. Winders were ruled out early, allowing the design to remain clean and linear. This gave creative freedom to Bisca’s design team, over tread detailing and glass balustrade integration.
Open and closed risers were explored, alongside options for a minimalist glass balustrade or forged uprights. From an engineering perspective, one of the most significant challenges was managing the transition between different upstairs floor levels; while maximising ceiling height beneath the staircase.
The final design showcases a crisp zig-zag, cut-string profile, formed from beautifully crafted oak treads and risers. Each tread supports a minimalist glass balustrade made from low-iron glass. Fixed with no visible fittings, this preserves clarity, light and elegance within the design. A matching oak handrail flows effortlessly along the glass balustrade, transforming into a gently curved newel post at the foot.
Where Modern Materials Merge with History
To accommodate the split-level access above, cranked steel was expertly introduced to support the landing structure. A contemporary glass balustrade was then face-fixed to exposed timber beams, creating a compelling contrast between old and new.
This carefully considered mix of materials – oak, steel and glass – was further enhanced by a chunky oak landing fascia and bespoke coach bolts. These details subtly reference the barn’s agricultural heritage, while delivering a thoroughly modern yet beautiful oak-inspired aesthetic.
Bisca worked closely with the client’s building contractor, producing a detailed pre-installation scope of works. This collaboration ensured absolute precision including creating pocket walls to support structural bridge beams and adjusting door heights to accommodate stepped floor levels.
Featured Staircase Lighting adds Bespoke Design Detail
This level of consideration adds real value to the staircase process, ensuring both structural and visual impact are optimised. The true Bisca Difference lies in the detail; and in this project, the skill of our craftsmen was pivotal. Installation was carried out with meticulous accuracy, creating perfectly equal shadow gaps between the wall and the zig-zag profiled treads.
These shadow gaps were highlighted by discreetly integrated staircase lighting within the walls and overhead bridge. The striking geometry of its featured oak structure and cut string design were elevated to new heights. Every element was intricately considered and expertly executed to create a unique work of art.
Here’s What Our Client Had To Say…
The final result is stunning and has achieved the long list of objectives we set out with. Please pass on my thanks to everybody involved – including those I most likely did not meet, but whom I am sure played an important part.
