Defining The Detail – The Art of Handrail Design
More Than Something to Hold…
At Bisca, we take the staircase handrail beyond its practical purpose, making it an integral part of our creative design process. By exploring its potential and how the handrail can become a distinctive feature, our designers weave together form, materials and craftsmanship to create something truly individual, with artistry at its heart.
Bisca’s founder and design director, Richard McLane, explains:
“From shape and touch, to expression of curves, intricate connections and beautiful aesthetics, each handrail offers the opportunity to create something truly individual, with the freedom to explore and exploit every detail.”

The Staircase Handrail as a Sculptural Feature
Through its proportions, shape and continuity, the handrail has the potential to become one of the most expressive elements of a staircase. Its design will guide the visual journey of a staircase, bringing together each individual element to create a fluid and carefully considered composition.
At Belvelly Castle, Ireland, a leather-clad handrail follows the profile of the helical staircase and continues onto the landing. Its graceful sweep draws the eye through the space, while the rich leather finish brings warmth, against the raw steel balustrade and oak treads.

The Alchemy of Materials and Craft
Material choice can introduce intrigue, create harmony or make a bold statement within the staircase design. Timber, leather and steel each offer different possibilities, from the natural richness of their textures to the striking contrast of their combination. The artistry lies in how these materials are shaped, brought together and worked into the finer details.
At this Bristol barn conversion, the oval oak handrail provides a smooth, tactile contrast to the sculptural steelwork. Its carefully considered profile complements the oak treads, showing how the shape and material of a handrail can bring both visual cohesion and comfort to a staircase.

Shaping Atmosphere with Light
Integrated lighting can bring another dimension to a staircase handrail, guiding the eye and shaping the atmosphere around it. Carefully positioned, it can accentuate the detailing of the staircase or create a gentle interplay of light and shadow across the surrounding architecture.
Working alongside architects Bramhall Blenkharn Leonard on this newly built property, Bisca incorporated specialist lighting which casts a soft radiance across the wall, drawing the staircase into its wider architectural setting. At Belvelly Castle above, you will notice concealed lighting beneath the leather handrail instead brings the treads into focus.

The Beauty of Form and Feel
A handrail is one of the few architectural details in your home that you will experience so intimately. Its profile and finish should offer a sense of comfort and delight; feeling as beautiful to the eye as it is reassuring to the hand. In Richard’s words, “The foundation is functionality, but the handrail is just as much an item of joy… something to both admire visually and appreciate through touch.”
At this Richmond farmhouse, a forged newel meets a leather handrail. The contrast between the strength of the metal and the softness of the leather creates a tactile richness. This transition between materials becomes a distinctive feature in its own right.
